The Journey of Rwandan Coffee: From Seed to Sip

Coffee in Rwanda is more than just a drink — it is part of the country’s cultural identity. Rwandans have been growing and brewing coffee for generations, with a history that stretches back to the early 1900s. The beans grown in the volcanic soils of the country’s highlands are famous for their exceptional flavor profile, with fruity, floral, and nutty notes.

What to Expect During the Experience:
1. The Coffee Ceremony: A Ritual of Connection
At Umurishyo, we recreate the traditional Rwandan coffee ceremony, which is a cherished practice of hospitality. The ceremony, which can last for up to an hour, is not just about drinking coffee, but about bringing people together, sharing stories, and honoring the coffee’s journey from farm to cup.
Roasting the Beans: Watch as we roast fresh, green coffee beans over an open flame. The aroma fills the air as the beans crackle and transform into the rich, dark beans used to brew the perfect cup.
Grinding the Coffee: Once roasted, the beans are ground using a traditional mortar and pestle or a manual grinder. This method releases the natural oils, ensuring a deep, rich flavor.
Brewing with Care: The coffee is brewed using a traditional clay pot or a modern French press, depending on your preference. The careful brewing process brings out the full richness of the coffee’s flavor.
Tasting & Sharing: The coffee is poured into small cups, and you’ll have the chance to taste the deep, full-bodied flavors that Rwanda’s coffee is known for. The ceremony is not only about tasting but also about connecting with others and sharing this part of Rwandan culture.
2. Coffee Tasting: Understanding the Flavor Profile
During the experience, our coffee experts will guide you through the flavors of Rwandan coffee. From the fruity notes to the floral undertones, you will gain a deeper understanding of what makes Rwandan coffee so unique. You’ll learn how factors such as altitude, soil, and processing methods influence the flavor of the coffee.
You’ll be introduced to various types of Rwandan coffee, including:
Arabica Coffee: Known for its smooth, fruity, and acidic flavors.
Bourbon Coffee: A specific variety of Arabica with a sweet, mild taste.
Through guided tastings, you’ll explore the distinctive notes, learn how to properly savor coffee, and discover the art of pairing coffee with other local flavors.
